Evaluation of my magazine

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that Bauer Media Group would be a good institution to be part of as it is well known and owns more than eighty media brands.
It owns:
Heat magazine
Kiss 100
Kerrang!

Q

Bauer would advertise my magazine well, like it did with Kerrang! and Q, by linking it to music radios and music channels.

It would want to distribute my magazine as it is different from the other magazines it sells, This is because the magazine's focus is RnB and Hiphop and there is no other magazine for this audience already so there would not be any competitors.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is aimed at; both girls and boys, aged 16 - 23, who like RnB and Hiphop.
Their life includes...

The house style:
The font I used through out the magazine is Combat Ready BTN, it is bold and fits the target audience as it is stylish but also looks like a stamp.
The colours are yellow and black these represent RnB well and are also unisex colours so the magazine is obviously for both boys and girls.

Images:
My images represent the age group of 16 – 23 as most of the artists in them are around this age. Also what they are wearing attracts the right audience as they are obviously into hip-hop and clubbing music in these outfits.
The font cover:
It is not too crowed and is not overloaded with the colour black, this is to make sure it does not appeal to people interested in rock music. The colours, fonts and sell lines are aimed at people interested in RnB music, also along the bottom the names of the artists featured inside are shown, this makes it clear what group the magazine is aimed at.

Evaluation of my magazine

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Looking at existing music magazines such as Q, Kerrang! and NME I know what kinds of things to expect in a magazine, such as:

  • A mast head/logo:

  • A house style:

  • Images; live/posed:

  • A double page spread
  • Music related articles; interview with artist or reviews of gigs
  • Listings; gig guides
  • Contents page; showing what bands are inside
These things are expected from a music magazine so I did not want to change much so I have included most of these in my magazine but in different ways to suit my target audience. You can see that here, where I have compared my magazine cover to Q magazine's cover:

What is the same:
  1. What is inside is along the bottom
  2. Logo/Mast head is at the top and bold
  3. Main artists name is large compared to other text
  4. House colours and fonts used
  5. One image used which takes up most of the page
  6. Used shapes to show sell lines, this look like its a sticker with the latest news, added last minute.
What is different:

To start with I have used different images to normal music magazines. On the font cover I have a posed, direct image. It is unusual as she is meant to be a famous singer and her photos are usually of her singing or her drunk, this image is to show a different side to her, which the readers will notice is different, so will be intrigued.

My double page spread is also slightly different, the target audience of my magazine said they wanted to read about background stories on the artist, therefore my double page spread is not about the music but about the artist.
