Draft of my contents page

The layout of my draft started off very square and neat, but I asked for feedback and was told that it should be more cluttered and the headings should be more randomly laid out. I was told the heading 'contents' looked boring so I twisted it so it looked more effective and like it had been stamped on to the page.

I divided up the page into two sections, the main feature and the other features. This is so the readers know straight away what the main feature is as it is important.

My partner and I decided on the house colours as yellow and black so I have used these colours in my contents page. I have also used the same font through out so it is consistent.

I chose not to put all of the pages in the magazine on the contents page, instead I have just picked the most important. I did not want to write much for each page as I think that if they have spent a lot of money on this magazine they are likely to read most of the pages anyway. I have used a large image for the main feature as this is the most important and needs to attract the readers attention, but I also have used three smaller pictures to show what will be inside the magazine.

I have spilt the pages up into different sections of the magazine, each section is easily found as I have put headings above each one, this is to make life easier for the reader.

I will have an image of the double page spread as well, this is to show the reader what they will find on this page. I also think it is easier to find the page if you know what it is going to look like.

At the bottom of the page, in the footer, I have included the magazine name, month and page number. All magazines have these at the bottom of the page so I have added it to mine.

Images I am using in my magazine

For my double page spread, content page and title page I am using lots of picture of Charlotte Brown. I took these myself and got her to do as I wanted in them. I wanted the photos to be posed for on the font cover but I also wanted some photos of her, inside the magazine, where she is out and about as she is known for being a party animal.
Here are some of the photos I took of her and her band:

This is the image I took for the front cover of my magazine. She is looking directly at the camera to make the audience fell like they know her better. I got her to hug a cushion to make her look young and vulnerable. This is because everyone knows her as a confident girl but this interview is about what she is really like. People would be used to seeing pictures of her drunk so to see Charlotte look different like this will make people interested so will buy the magazine to read more.

To make the image more effective I made it brighter and made the background white, this makes it stand out more and looks more professional. Here is the final image I used on my front cover:

Analysing a contents page

I have looked at contents pages from some music magazines and analysed the layout and language that is used. Using this information I can make my own contents page more like a music magazine and aimed at the right audience. Here is a presentation on two magazine content pages I looked at:

Video on our magazine

My partner and I agreed on some key elements for our new magazine. We used our results from the questionnaires we gave out to our target audience. In this video I am talking about how music fits into our target audience's lives and how our magazine will meet their needs.

Results of Questionnaire for target audience

I asked 14 people between the ages of 16 and 23, this is the age group of my target audience. Here are the questions I asked and the results I got:

1: Which are you most interested in reading about in a double page spread?

  1. The music itself
  2. The background and personality of the artist
From these results I can see that most people in my target audience would prefer to read about the background and personality of the artist, therefore this is what I will focus on in my own magazine.

2: On a double page spread, do you prefer?

  1. Lots of text and small images
  2. Big images and very little text
  3. An even amount of images and text

My double page spread will be about an even amount of both text and images as this is what the target audience most prefers.

3: What is your favourite type of music?

With these results I can see that my target audience likes lots of different types of music, but my magazine cannot cover all of these so I have chosen to focus more on RnB and Pop as these were the most popular types of music chosen.

4: Name 3 bands/singers you like?

I got a lot of different artists from this question, therefore I picked the most common ones and looked at the results of them. I can see that Tiny Temper and Pixie Lott are the overall favourites, this backs up the fact that the favourite types of music are RnB and Pop as these singers fit into those categories.

This questionnaire has helped me decided what I should focus on in my magazine. I want the magazine to be aimed directly at the target audience and now I know exactly what they like, I can do this.
