Looking back I can now see that my school magazine would need a lot of changes to be acceptable. Although it does have some of the forms and conventions that my music magazine follows now;
- They both have a large masthead at the top of the page
- Both have a tag line under the masthead
- The main image takes up most of the page
- Shapes around the sell lines
1. That to make a magazine you have to consider the target audience the whole way though.
The target audience is not very clear on the old magazine, although it shows school children and the school logos, the font and colour would not appeal to them. In the new magazine, the use of yellow and black make it clear that this magazine is aimed at more RnB than classical music or rock.
The artist's image and names of artists featured inside are bold to stand out. This attracts the correct audience and makes it obvious which kind of people should read this magazine. In the old magazine there is more than one image which makes confuses you where to look but the sell lines show it is a school magazine.
2. I think that looking at other music magazines and analysing then was a great help.
We did not do this in the preliminary task, therefore I was unsure where to begin but in the second task it really helped.
3. To stick to the forms and conventions as much as you can unless the target audience would prefer something different.
This is what people have come to expect from a magazine and this works. If you changed it to much it would not appeal to the social group the conventions are aimed at. However I challenged some of them to fit my target audience better.
